Monsters & Music

Excerpts from Chimera’s Garden by Lisa Renée Coons

Performance

The Monster Menagerie is a new solo show that merges a lifelong penchant for fantastical creatures with the expanding theatrical scope of my performance practice. The project weaves new and recently-composed works for speaking and moving flutist into a cohesive dramatic arc that interrogates themes of hybridity, otherness, and the porous boundaries of humankind through musical portraits of our greatest fears.

Scholarship

With a special focus on the many reinterpretations of the mythological Chimera, my research examines the depiction and performance of monstrosity through sound by applying sociocultural theory to musical analysis in order to deepen our understanding of concepts like hybridity, otherness, and the porous boundaries of humankind.

Check out my doctoral thesis and lecture recital! I have presented my research at the UCSC Center for Monster Studies as well as music schools across the country, and am always excited to share this work with new audiences.

Sentient Circuity

A new collaboration with composer Nicole Brancato, incorporating an evolving graphic score and mangled electronics in a meditation on the mutually-monstrous relationship between human and machine.
